Kim Agnew

Dance, Choreography, Percussion, Fashion Consultation

Adding visual kinetic spice to ALBINO's stage show is dancer/percussionist Kim Agnew. Kim studied dance and percussion under the tutelage of Cuban and West African masters and honed her skills performing in various World Music groups such as the Slaptones and Pangea. An active teacher for over a decade, Agnew is a veteran of the San Francisco Ballet's outreach programs and the Cazadero Performing Arts Camp. Kim now occupies herself with the considerable undertaking of assisting the men of ALBINO! to move and dress as funky as they play. Kim is the band's primary "bedazzler," designing and creating most of the wild costumes ALBINO! flaunts onstage. She also enjoys showering more frequently than anyone else in the band.

Jon Arkin

Drums

ALBINO! audiences frequently will discover the likes of Jon Arkin haunting the posterior of the band with his interruptive and backwards percussive stylings. A product of extreme eastern climates, diverse musical influences, and extensive snack food explorations, Arkin is now an in-demand Bay Area drumset artist and dedicated vegan nomad. Attuned ALBINO! listeners often experience mid-show hallucinations of delicately steamed organic vegetables and whole grains, garnished with golden ribbons of flax oil, gomashio, and cashew cream: a phenomenon attributable to Arkin's veggie-powered rhythmic exclamations.

Michael Bello

Saxophones, Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Heavenly Thunder

The primal wizardry of Bello's music emanates from the mystical intersection of human and bestial consciousness. With wild compositional abandon he cultivates the lush yet savage jungle that is ALBINO's repertoire, as he roars like a rabid howler monkey from atop its canopy. On tenor and baritone saxophones, Bello often transcends the earthly plane: like a hallowed bellows his lungs conjure sounds that seem to thunder from the Heavens. On keys, he serves up a stench even funkier than the gorgonzola cheese fermenting inside his antique stovepipe hat. Finally, with his Fela-esque vocal growl Bello stirs the soul as he Deconstructs the Transitional Movement of a nation led woefully astray.

Kevin "Bam Bam" Blair

Bass

Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Kevin developed a proclivity toward funky music at a young age, getting "up like a sex machine" before he understood the actual purpose of such a device. One of ALBINO's veteran composers, Bam Bam may not always be easily spotted in the melee of ALBINO's stage circus, but his heavy bass grooves are always felt in the gut, propelling innocent bystanders onto the dance floor. Kevin spent time traveling and studying in South Africa, which helped him to grasp some of the intricacies and nuances of performing African music. He is capable of channeling Elvis Presley's spirit at will and often sports King-sized mutton chops.

"Downtown" Chris Brown

Trumpet, Sleep-Deprived Bus Driving

Bay Area native Chris Brown is responsible for ALBINO's funky upper-register flavor. His trumpet playing is consistently raw and soulful, which may be attributed to his claim to being an illegitimate son of Stevie Wonder. Chris studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and has decades of playing and teaching experience under his belt. This is due in part to the fact that he is actually 83 years old, but allegedly discovered the Fountain of Youth while working for health food stores. Chris asserts that in order to preserve his spritely youthful glow he must often take unsanctioned flugelhorn solos during ALBINO! performances.

Patrick Byers

Baritone Sax, Subversive Mischief

Providing the bottom end to ALBINO’s heavy heavy horn section is the enigmatic, chameleonic, and sometimes androgynous Patrick Byers. Pat is a Northern California native who studied jazz performance at Sonoma State and became guardian of the ALBINO! reed section’s lowest frequencies after years of touring with Aphrodesia and Lee Press-On & the Nails. When he isn’t honking like an elephant seal in heat, Pat can be found donning his form fitting neoprene and war paint to chase the elusive perfect wave across the Nor Cal coast. ALBINO! Fun Fact: Pat is impossibly handsome, mostly because he never learned how to frown.

Nathan Endsley

Co-Founder, Tenor Sax, Flute, Cat Herder

After a brief affair with the exotic world groovers Hamsa Lila, Endsley planted the seeds that would grow into the monstrous behemoth that is now ALBINO. When leading ALBINO! with his patented funky horn lines, Nathan spends his time steering his beloved Afro-beast of a band toward world domination. Beware, this is no easy task: when Endsley started the project, he had a Fabio-esque mane of long, flowing hair. He's since pulled it all out to the point of resembling Mr. Clean.

Jacob Groopman

Guitar, The man with the tour plan

Jacob Groopman was born to a pack of wild dogs in the mountains of Virginia. He left his parents' cave to study jazz performance at the Oberlin Conservatory, and moved to California after having peculiar dreams involving mangos and a strange musical style he had never heard before which was later identified by his psychic to be Afrobeat. Jacob's funky guitar skills are a key element to ALBINO's rhythmic foundation, and with his rousing solos he can trigger spontaneous orgasms upon targeted audience members at will like a pied sniper. An established Bay Area musician of many trades, Jacob also plays in the bluegrass bands Nell Robinson and Red Level along with The Mountain Boys.

Treviño "Tre" León

Congas

Treviño has traveled extensively as a professional drummer in the Ewe tradition for the past 27 years. He also specializes in Afro-Cuban drumming, and performs with the CK Ladzekpo's West African Music and Dance Ensemble. As a teacher, Tre conducts Ghanaian, Beninian, Nigerian and Afro-Cuban drum theory, history, and dance workshops around the San Francisco Bay Area.

Michael Pinkham

Drums

Behind the drum kit is Michael Pinkham, whose slinky yet driving rhythms have been a key force behind such acts as Diego's Umbrella, Monkey Knife Fight and Boca Do Rio. A moody sonofabitch who's always flossing, Pinkham has formally studied tabla and West African drumming, and maintains a deep reverence for the swinging drumming style of Afrobeat groove architect Tony Allen. He has toured internationally with Samba do Coracao, a traditional samba batteria and dance company.

Cal “Caltron” Reichenbach

Guitar, Tailoring

ALBINO! guitarist Cal Reichenbach is a seasoned producer, session guitarist, and guitar teacher. While on the road, Caltron retains his sanity by obsessively stitching swaths of West African mud cloth onto a wide array of clothing items. While engrossed in his fervent spells of craftiness, he responds only to the name “Holly Hobbie.” Reichenbach is also a member of the instrumental groove band SOCKET, and he often performs with the infamous pan-African funk outfit Aphrodesia. Cal wants to play guitar on your recording! Visit calreichenbach.com for more info on how to collaborate with him over the Internet.

Matt "Smitty" Smith

Congas, Grease Monkey

Smitty brings the New York “Ying” to The Cali “Yang” of ALBINO! and can often be found talking smack from the driver’s seat of the ALBINO! Hyper-turbo tour bus. Smitty has traveled extensively in Ghana and Mexico for studies in traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms and still maintains a steady diet on the road of fresh goat and casava fries. After moving from New York to California in 2002, Smitty's 12 years of drumming experience and studies with master drummers such as Yacub Addey, Changuito, and George Oko Yarte has earned him the coveted "dude with the best view of the horn players asses" spot on the ALBINO! stage. When not holding down heartbeat for ALBINO, Smitty can be found touring the West Coast with SF Afro-Jamband The Flux.
